Marijuana edibles in Colorado are going to look different soon

October 12, 2016 by LEAH D'AMBROSIO

“The No. 1 goal here: It’s about public safety, it’s about public health, and, above all, it’s sensitive to the risk this poses to children,” Jim Burack, the director of the Colorado Department of Revenue’s Marijuana Enforcement Division told The Cannabist.

The Green Cross Safety Symbol clearly marks products containing THC and reduces the risk of children mistaking it for candy.

Obama Administration Says No to Pot

“You have little kids that accidentally get into this stuff; or a baby sitter might give a child something out of the pantry, not realizing what it is. Those accidental issues are on the rise, and it’s a big problem.”

The issue of how to keep children from accidentally consuming edible marijuana continues to hold back legalization efforts. It’s imperative that edible companies begin clearly marking their edibles. In order to move forward with legalization parents and legislators will have to see that edible manufacturers are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of children above profits.

Colorado Edibles Retailer Says Changes Needed To Protect Kids

October 12, 2016 by LEAH D'AMBROSIO

“I feel like the universal [THC] symbol is a great start to the process of… making cannabis-infused products more noticeable… but I think as far as the expectations for kids, it’s tough to think that that symbol would deter them from [consuming] it, without some education behind it.”

We encourage companies outside of Colorado, such as Happy Seed Edibles in California, to adopt the Green Cross Safety Symbol. Kids as young as two years old can learn to avoid edibles marked with green crosses.

“As more states pass laws legalizing recreational marijuana, legislators and health care professionals will need to consider strategies to decrease its effect on young children.”

Using edible marijuana is a great way to eliminate exposing children to pot smoke, but what about the risk of accidental consumption? Baked Smart has a simple strategy to prevent children from ingesting marijuana infused foods: marking your edibles with Cannacals. After being taught to avoid foods marked with green crosses children as young as two years old can learn to distinguish a regular food from something that contains cannabis.

Cannabis Business Alliance Statement on Edibles and Child-Proofing – Cannabis Business Times

October 12, 2016 by LEAH D'AMBROSIO

“CBA maintains that banning legal edibles or regulating edibles out of existence merely pushes a safe, regulated, taxable industry with professionally produced, lab-tested products packaged in childproof packaging into the Black Market where homemade edibles with no testing or limits on potency and no required packaging become a much more dangerous situation for children.”

An outright ban will never be as effective as clearly labeling any cannabis infused foods and educating the youth on avoiding accidental consumption.
